My friend Ben Jackson is doing the 'Great Gorilla Run 2007'. The blurb:

Extinct: The orang-utan

I've just watched a ITV production called Extinct. The premise of the show to to show how some of our most adorable animals are becoming extinct. The show looks to have close ties with the WWF: One of the shows today was about the orang-utan. Seeing this animal being wiped out by forest fires so that we can have plantations to geed our over whelming consumer greed drives me a little mad. These animals, as well as all the other featured animals in the show, really need our help. I hope in the future to go out and volunteer but for now i can help out by making a donation. Critical facts * In the last 100 years, 90% of the orang-utan population has disappeared. If this decline continues, it is likely that they will become extinct in the wild in 20 years time.
* Orang-utans cannot reproduce fast enough to keep up with their losses. Females become mature at 10-15 years old and will only have 3 or 4 offspring in their lifetime.
* Uncontrolled forest fires during the dry season may kill hundreds of slow moving orang-utans. Those which escape the forest fires may be killed by villagers if the apes come in to their fields looking for food.
* Illegal trading of orang-utans for the pet trade continues today. It is thought that five or six animals die for every one that is traded.
